Ten years ago, a field appeared after an incident, that isolated the city of Tokyo from the outside world. The gate would later recieve the alias “Hell’s Gate” and the details of the world beyond the gate are a mystery to its inhabitants.
One week after Hell’s Gates appearance, beings with supernatural powers known as “Contractors” and mediums known as “Dolls” had come into existence. People have no idea why the Contractors do what they do, since all memory of people coming into contact with them is erased. All the people of this city can do is fear what they don’t understand.
Li Shunsheng is an exchange student from China, come to live in Tokyo to attend school. Or is he? Underneath his lazy looks and his kind nature…could this man be hiding a dark secret?

[Nyanto's Thoughts: A confusing first episode, though I really do like it. BONES' animation is strong and the music by the talented Yoko Kanno, creates a great atmosphere as the story progresses. I strongly recommend that people rewatch this episode after you've seen episode two, it will clear up some things that were confusing.
Personally, I really loved this episode! It's something that I haven't seen done before, and that is always nice to see from a new anime. Animation, voice acting, and music are all fantastic. I would recommend this series to almost everyone. :3]
